This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh.
Workshop Details
Carving a small decorative wooden mirror frame about the size of a makeup mirror. The mirror is made in two halves, one side has the decoration carved in the shape of a daisy and the mirror side is flat. The frame will be drawn out freehand onto wooden blanks and the daisy shape and mirror hole will be sawn from wooden blanks by hand using a fret saw. The daisy decoration will be carved using wood carvers knives. The frame is Cedar Lebanon, a lovely fragrant wood which is ideal for beginners.
Students will be able to buy the two carving knives after the session if they wish to continue carving at home

Materials
materials are not included in the booking fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £12 payable to the tutor during the workshop.
Carving knives will be available to buy after the session. Price to be confirmed by supplier

- Students will learn how to hold work securely on the bench
- How to use a fret saw,
- How to use two types of wood carvers knife safely
- How to keep a razor edge on the knives using a leather strop
- How to mount the mirror and how to glue the mirror frame sides together
- How to shape and finish the frame using two different types of sandpaper
- Advice will be given on finish and colour to be completed at home

Students - please bring with you:
- An apron,
- A fret saw if you have one of your own, I will supply enough for the class but it is sometimes nice to use your own tools…If students have a penknife or whittling knife they would like to bring along please do; we will have a brief session on sharpening so bring along any that need a bit of care.
