Wed 1st March 10am - 12pm
(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for beginners and those who want to learn a bit more about the basics of the two mediums. There will be work-along elements during this workshop, so we would encourage students to have their materials to hand, ready to participate live if they would like to.
Workshop details
Watercolours & gouache are wonderful versatile mediums that can be used in a wide variety of ways from loose and expressive to graphic and illustrative. In this workshop we will be exploring their similarities and differences – and the various techniques for painting with them individually and combined.
We will first cover the basics of colour mixing, exploring the transparent and opaque qualities of the paints, and a range of techniques for mark-making, layering and blending.
Then, working on both light and dark grounds, we will create a series of small sample images concentrating on the particular qualities of each medium, and using them together to enhance each other.
This fun and informal workshop will guide you through the basics of these complementary paints – suitable for beginners to either medium, as well as those wishing to learn how to use watercolours in a different way.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Karen will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Colour mixing with primary colours
- Techniques & materials for effective mark-making & layering
- Using the paint in a variety of ways: thick/thin, transparent/opaque etc.
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- Medium weight watercolour paper (cold-pressed or ‘Not’ surface)
- Brushes – whatever you have (including scraggy old brushes!) – I recommend soft synthetic brushes (particularly for gouache which has more ‘body’ than watercolour – however, your normal watercolour brushes will be fine if you already have some)
- Pointed stick (such as a cocktail stick), Dip pen or feather
- Mixing palette (ideally with wells in, but a plate would be okay)
- Kitchen roll
- Water pots
- Watercolour paints: Phthalo Blue, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow Light, Paynes Grey, White Gouache (tube watercolours are easiest to use if you have them – Winsor & Newton and Daler-Rowney both do decent student quality paints)
- Gouache: Primary Blue, Primary Yellow, Primary Red (or Bengal Rose) plus white and black (Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache are recommended)
