This two-day, onsite workshop is suitable for beginners (that know the basics of using their sewing machine) and those wishing to refresh.
Workshop Details
Work alongside Anne to create a decorative, yet functional panel, that can be used to make a lampshade, picture, hanging, cushion or table runner - the choice will be yours.
Using her unique hand painted fabric (or your own) you will decorate the fabric using Ox Eye Daisies and Cow Parsley. The background is embellished with free machine embroidery while the daisies are individually stitched and then appliquéd in place, giving a 3D appearance. The Cow Parsley heads and stalks are added using free motion embroidery and are embellished with beading. Further machine stitching allows you to add leaves to your daisies and grasses as features. The design can then be extended with more flowers or simply repeated across the panel.
Once all stitching is complete you have a choice of options to complete your textile artwork. Turn it into a 25cm drum lampshade; Quilt it perhaps or make a table runner, wall hanging or cushion or simply mount and frame as a picture.
Skills / Techniques Covered
Anne will show you how to use free motion stitching - suitable for those completely new to the technique or those in need of a refresher.
You will also learn how to create a pleasing design using both flowers, whatever the size of your fabric. There will be tuition on stitch and appliqué for the Daisies and further embellishment using stitch and beading.
Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £10 payable to the tutor during the workshop. An extra cost of £12 will apply if you wish the tutor to provide the lampshade kit. These will have to be pre-ordered so please let the school know if you want to buy one. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below:
Students - please bring with you:
The tutor uses hand-painted cotton fabric but commercially printed fabrics can be used if you prefer - those with marbled or graduated colours would work best.
NOTE: You can create the design on fabric of any size, but measurements for the additional materials - if you are providing your own - are based on the lampshade. This will be the largest project to create over the two days.
Lampshade
The tutor chose to make the background “sky” blue but it could be green or any other colour that you like.
If making a Table runner / picture / hanging / cushion - the fabric can be smaller if you wish, but a minimum size of 25cms square.
If making a Table Runner or Hanging - you will also need backing fabric, wadding and bias binding.
If making a Picture - you will need a box frame and mount board the size of your finished design plus a strong thread to stretch and lace your work in place.
If making a Cushion – enough fabric to also back the cushion or an alternative fabric. Bias binding and a zip (optional)
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
