This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for a mixed ability group - ranging from those with a little experience to those with a higher understanding of painting with watercolour. The tutor's aim is to make sure that everyone gains something from the workshop, supporting students with demos and one-to-one guidance throughout the day. This workshop is not suitable for absolute beginners as the bare basics will not be covered.
Workshop Details
This is not your average petite, pretty flower painting or botanical study day. This is workshop to help you give your flower painting the wow factor. Using dynamic brush strokes, vibrant colour and bold format and scale, we will enjoy creating a radiant and lively floral painting, abundant with the joys of spring.
Nicky will demonstrate the different stages of a painting along with watercolour techniques which you will then use yourself during the day to create your own painting in a vibrant, loose and relaxed style.

Students Please Bring
Please bring your own watercolour kit which should consist of the following items
The tutor will have items to loan for any bits and pieces missing and will have watercolour paper to purchase at £3 per sheet, so no need to buy any items or colours especially in advance.
Colour Selection
A Warm and a cool shade of each primary and an earth tone is good to have in any watercolour palate we will use the following.
Neutrals - helpful on occasion but not essential
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.

Skills / Techniques Covered
- Paint these beautiful flowers in a vibrant and expressive style with loose and lively watercolour techniques using wet in to wet and direct painting methods.
- Understanding the importance of using a range of tone from light to dark, colour mixing guidance to help you keep the lights and mix effective radiant colours and intense darks to give your painting impact.
- Understanding the importance of shape and edge control to achieve soft delicate edges and stronger areas of impact and use these skills to intergrate the flower with background effectively.
- Working large to encourage students to work build and larger scale to really add impact and wow factor to paintings.

Students Please Bring
Please bring your own watercolour kit which should consist of the following items
- Watercolour paints
- Any brand is OK but academy, or student quality should be avoided
- Watercolour brushes
- A medium and large round or mop style squirrel or sable
- A small and medium pointed round brush - synthetic
- Small retailer brush
- Watercolour paper
- At least A3 - Rough or Not surface paper is required 140 1b weight
- I use Bockingford or Saunders Waterford brands but any good quality brand such as Fabriano or Langton is fine
- It is better to bring it stretched and ready on a board and a spare piece also.
- Other items
- Waterpots, palette, drawing board, kitchen roll, pencil, rubber

- Lemon yellow ( cool)
- Raw Sienna ( warm)
- Cobalt blue (cool)
- Ultra marine blue ( warm)
- Burnt Umber (warm)
- Cerrulean blue or turquoise (warm)
- Permanent Rose ( warm)
- Dioxiazine Purple ( cool)
- Helios Purple (Sennelier - Brand) or magenta or similar cool vibrant pink shade.

- Lamp Black
- China White
