This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in the book illustrators of the late 1800s and is open to students of all abilities.
Workshop details
In this, the fourth of our In the Style Of series, Martin Beek and Heather Held will be taking an in-depth look at the Victorian book illustrators from 1850 - 1900.
ArtTalk
In part one, Martin will offer an overview of illustrators of the time, with particular reference to the Pre-Raphaelite illustrators. We will explore the rich and numerous illustrations of the 'Moxon Tennyson', 'Once a Week', and 'The Cornhill Magazine'.
In part two, Martin will turn to the latter part of the century and the influence of the Arts & Crafts movement on the illustrators of the time. We will explore the work of Aubrey Beardsley, Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway and more.
Martin's talks will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talks via the blackboard.
Demonstration
Taking cues from the fantastic line art of Arthur Rackham, the delicate florals of Kate Greenaway, and the fairytale follies of Walter Crane, we will work across the two classes on bookplate or card designs reminiscent of the illustrators of the Victorian age.
During part one, we will practice pen etching and shading effects with black and sepia ink on paper. The Victorian line and wash technique will be introduced in part two as we add washes of watercolour in the style of Kate Greenaway.
We will work together to create small, charming designs as you befriend these storybook worlds. These techniques are so versatile and will open a world of possibilities for you to explore.
Heather's demonstrations will be accompanied by a beautiful handout, shared via the blackboard, offering a wonderful downloadable resource for you to use for years to come.
