Wed 5th April 2pm - 5pm
Our brand new 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever-popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in the work of Van Gogh and is open to students of all abilities. Apart from your notepad and pen, you needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this class.
Workshop details
In this, the fifth of our new series, Martin Beek and Jo Dixon will be taking an in-depth look at the work of Vincent Van Gogh, particularly during the Arles period.
ArtTalk
Martin will offer an overview of the life of Van Gogh, before focusing on the importance of the Arles period. We will be paying particular attention to three works - Cottage Garden, Wheatfields with Cornflowers, and Orchard in Blossom.
Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the blackboard.
Demonstration
Taking inspiration from the crucial Arles period towards the end of Van Gogh's life, Jo will explore the distinctive techniques of his graphic style; from the myriad of mark-making effects in pen and ink, to the pure colour and the impasto textural brushwork in the paintings.
Learn how to work in his style, follow his colour palette, and use complimentary colour to achieve vivid images capturing mood and movement. Jo will demonstrate the techniques and guide you through creating a painting and drawing in this fascinating style using your own images as inspiration.
Jo's demonstration will be accompanied by a handout and photos, shared via the blackboard, offering a wonderful downloadable resource for you to use for years to come.
