Workshop details
Being playful is something we seem to lose as we become adult – sometimes it’s hard to get back to that place where it didn’t matter if things went wrong. Work through some simple calligraphic exercises to explore tools and see what they can do to re-ignite that joy in mark-making.
See what variety of calligraphic tools are at our disposal, and what they can do for us. Some work best for careful writing, others need a gestural treatment to show them at their best. The trick is to investigate their unique qualities and then exploit them through a series of simple exercises.
For this workshop, if you have such tools, feel free to be trying them out during the session, it will assist you in freeing-up. Whilst this won’t specifically focus on letterforms, some handouts with scripts will be provided to start you off.
Felt tips broad and pointed, cartridge pens, broad-edged, round-end and pointed dip pens of all makes, ruling pens, Cola pens, we’ll try them all to see how they can liven up our calligraphy. If you have them with you, join in as we go along. We may not complete anything but you should have fun exploring.
This will be a 2-hour workshop, with the final half-hour devoted to having a look at how you have been getting on and offering feedback. Come ready to play, to ask your questions and to have some fun.

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Mary will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
