This two-day workshop is suitable for complete beginners, and those with a little more experience.
Workshop Details
On Day 1 of the workshop, you will learn a little of the history of ‘sloyd’ carving, the safe use of sharp tools, greenwood selection, how to carve a simple butter spreader, and then start on a spoon! On Day 2, you will complete the first wooden spoon and, hopefully, carve at least one more!

Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The cost of these will be somewhere between £0 and £25 (depending on what you use) payable to the tutor during the workshop. Please bring cash, debit card or, cheque.

Skills & Techniques Covered
- Most importantly, learn how to safely and efficiently use very sharp hand tools, such as axes, straight knives and hooked knives.
- Understand the basic craft skills required, with a simple history and the origin of ‘sloyd’ carving of greenwood, to make functional and decorative items.
- Learn how to select appropriate wood species to carve.
- Learn to use and understand the different types of hand tools such as axes, straight knives and hook (curved) knives involved in the carving process.
- Learn the basic types of knife-cuts applied to the wood to achieve a particular process or effect. For safe working practice, this is absolutely essential.
- Learn the finishing techniques, such as drying, applying the finishing cuts (sandpaper is banned!), then oiling, painting, or otherwise decorating your spoon.

- A notebook and pencils. Phone-camera use with permission of the tutor.
- Appropriate tough footwear - this is essential
- An open mind!
- When booking, please advise the school if you are left or right handed.
- Your basic tools will be provided, and some may be available for sale.
