(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online workshop is designed for anyone who wants to understand the basics of sewing and making simple garments. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this online demonstration – it is a time to watch, ask and learn.
Workshop details
In this fun and fuss-free workshop, we will make a simple summer blouse from scratch using your own body measurements. No more arms that are too long or bodies that are too short!
You don't need any previous experience in sewing other than how to thread your machine and sew in a straight line, everything else Pete will teach you during this two-hour session. You can even hand-sew, if that's your thing!
The blouse you will be making is a loose fit that can be worn out or tucked into jeans /a skirt. The arms are gathered, and quite full, emphasising the summery, Boho chic style.
We will cover a number of techniques in this class that relate directly to the blouse but all will be useable in your future sewing projects. Pete has designed the course to include as many transferable skills as possible. It will give beginners a real boost in confidence and a whole new skill set, and intermediate sewers a renewed interest and possibly some new skills, especially when it comes to measuring and pattern cutting.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Pins can be purchased from almost any haberdashery or fabric store and can be found quite cheaply on amazon and Ebay. I would recommend any that are labelled long or large dressmakers pins as I find the shorter ones a little fiddly, but this is mainly because I have large hands.
Fabric scissors are also readily available at most haberdashers. If you do not already have specific fabric scissors, I would recommend Friskars (yes, the orange handled ones that everyone has!) They are reasonably priced, lightweight, reliable and have easy sharpening options available. They are also available in a variety of sizes to suit all hand sizes.
Fabric and thread can be purchased all over the place at hobby stores and haberdashers, here are a couple of online resources Pete uses frequently:
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Pete will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

- Fabric choice and preparation
- Basic garment construction
- Gathering to create fullness
- Making and using bias binding including mitred corners
- Making rouleau loops

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- Sewing Machine (or hand sewing needles if you choose to hand sew)
- Thread (in a colour that matches your fabric)
- 1.75m fabric that is roughly 140cm wide OR 2.7m of fabric at roughly 110cm wide
(Pete recommends cotton poplin, cotton lawn, light cotton, chambray, double gauze or stable linen. You may choose other fabrics or fabrics with mixed content but for beginners make sure your fabric is quite stable, not slippery or stretchy. More experienced sewers may want to use viscose, silk, velour or synthetic fabrics ) Please note that you may need more or less fabric depending on your size and if you choose to make your own bias binding. - 3.5m bias binding (if you are not making your own)
- One button (between 8-12mm)
- Pattern paper (dot and cross, plain or grid will all be fine, alternatively brown paper, grease proof paper or plain news print will do just as well)
- Pen/pencil, ruler and protractor
- Pins
- Fabric marker/tailors chalk
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter and cutting matt. (if you don’t already have a set of scissors specifically for fabric I would recommend the Fiskars, yes, the orange handled ones that everyone has. This is because they are reliable, come in a selection of different sizes for different size hands and have a good selection of sharpening options for the future, all at a fairly reasonable price)
- Iron
