This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for those who have taken a class with Maggie before, or are familiar with Chinese brush techniques. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this online demonstration – it is a time to watch, ask and learn.

Workshop details
In this class, Maggie will demonstrate how to paint water lilies and lotus, adding suitable birds and insects to the composition.

Although water lilies do not have any particular symbolic representation in Chinese culture, the lotus has a great deal. It is regarded as sacred with links to Buddhism.  You often see sculptures of Buddha sitting in a lotus flower, and it is the symbol of purity.

In addition to the flowers, Maggie will show you how to paint kingfisher, egret and dragonflies which are often seen near the water.  She will start by demonstrating the various strokes that make up the plants and creatures before arranging them in a simple composition.

Maggie will finish the class with some ideas on how to develop your skills by adding washes.

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

  • Two water pots

  • Any Chinese brush painting materials you have to include a selection of brushes, paper, ink and colours
    • Colours used will be blue reds such as rose and carmine, indigo, gamboge, burnt sienna and possibly white. (Watercolour or gouache are suitable if you have them)

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Maggie will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.

After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard.  You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.

We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

*The follow up session is not recorded to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work with the rest of the class, and receive personal feedback, without feeling self-conscious about being recorded.  We would encourage you all to join us live if you can – even if you were signed up as a ‘recording only’ participant for the workshop.
