This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for everyone.  It is a work-along workshop and so we would encourage students to have their materials to hand, ready to participate live during the class.

Workshop details
Many of you will know Janina Maher for her bookbinding and gel plate printing classes, but during lockdown she rediscovered her love of drawing and painting buildings and has been busy with commissions ever since.  In this brand-new two-part series, Janina will lead you through all the steps involved in drawing and painting buildings in pen line and watercolour wash.

In week 1, Janina will guide you through the materials including paper, paint, pens and masking fluid. We will use a front on image of a building and will start by mapping out the image onto watercolour paper. The second step is to start with some very simple line work and an easy sky. The next stage will be use of masking fluid to mask out the white areas of the picture. The rest of the session will be involve adding more pen work, and more paint, looking for the details of the image and adding the shadows.

In week 2, we will work on drawing and painting a building at an angle, and will start with some simple exercises to explore the “rules” of perspective. We will then use these rules to help us draw out the main shapes of the building in pencil and make sure the building looks realistic and in proportion. We will then start to add pen work and watercolour to progress the painting.

In both weeks you will be encouraged to work along, or if you prefer you can watch the demonstrations and work on your pictures afterwards.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • Using masking fluid to preserve the white of the paper
  • Using pen work to define the image
  • Applying watercolour paint using washes – wet on wet, and wet on dry
  • How to use shadows to give dimension to the painting
  • The basics of perspective

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Tutors will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.

After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard.  You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.

We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
