Mon 12th June 10am - 11:30am workshop demo
Mon 26th June 10am - 11am follow up & feedback session*
(UK timings)
This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for those with experience of the italic hand. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this online demonstration – it is a time to watch, ask and learn.
Workshop details
Whether it’s name cards, wedding invitations, or writing a favourite poem, flourishing adds liveliness and embellishment to even just a few words. In this class we will find out the simplest ways to achieve the graceful swirls that make Italic stand out.
Starting with revision on the core features of Italic hand, we’ll rapidly move on to the lively extensions of the ascenders & descenders, how to gain flow and balance proportions. If you want to write out poetry, then knowing just how much and how big to make your flourishes is the difference between elegance and spaghetti-like tangles.
Flourished capitals are particularly effective for anything that includes writing people’s names, so there will be a strong focus on getting these right, and exploring variation and liveliness. Combining a flourished capital with the lower-case includes being selective about how much embellishment is appropriate so as not to overdo it!
Simple touches for creating name cards will complete the session, using colour or pattern.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Mary will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
*The follow up session is not recorded to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work with the rest of the class, and receive personal feedback, without feeling self-conscious about being recorded. We would encourage you all to join us live if you can – even if you were signed up as a ‘recording only’ participant for the workshop.
