Workshop Details

Piano hinge books are an easy bookmaking structure to master which requires no stitching. Perfect for the beginner and an interesting one to develop using a variety of found materials. This is perfect for both those who have never made a book before, and those who wish to develop their existing skills

These books are relatively quick and affordable to make and they are perfect as gifts or can be made with children. The structure can also be developed into something more sophisticated. You will complete at least one book during the workshop and leave with a host of ideas on how to personalise your book. We will begin with the basic technique and then develop ideas using a range of different materials, beads, coloured or handmade papers or perhaps folded pockets and envelopes for a second book. If you wish you can bring personal ephemera to start filling your book.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • A variety of Cutting and folding techniques

Please Bring With You
  • Card (old cereal packet or similar weight packaging if perfect)
  • Range of papers, nothing too flimsy could be large envelopes, photocopy paper to something more exotic (handmade, your own decorated paper, brown paper or printed is also fine). These will be used for the pages of the book and the covers
  • Good quality wrapping paper, or wallpaper (plain lining paper or patterned) is ideal
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Liquid food colour and some cotton wool to apply it (you may also want some latex gloves). This will be used to colour the skewers
  • Pritt stick
  • PVA and spreader, children's pva is fine not the heavy duty stuff
  • Metal ruler
  • Paper Scissors
  • Bone folder if you have one
  • Stanley knife or craft knife and cutting mat if you have them
  • Notebook and pencil

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
