This LivePlus™ online workshop is designed for anyone who wants to understand the basics of sewing and making simple garments. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this online demonstration – it is a time to watch, ask and learn.
Workshop details
In this fun and fuss-free workshop, we will make a simple pair of lounge pants, joggers or pyjama bottoms from scratch using your own body measurements.
You don't need any previous experience in sewing other than how to thread your machine and sew in a straight line, everything else Pete will teach you during this two-hour session. You can even hand-sew, if that's your thing!
In this workshop we will learn how to use stretch/jersey knit material without the need for specialised equipment like an overlocker. Pete will take you through the differences between knitted and woven fabrics and how to control a stretch fabric in the course of making your trousers. We'll even be covering in-seam/hip pockets, because everyone needs pockets!
We will explore basic pattern making and make the trousers to your own measurements - no more extra long or too short hems around the ankles! In fact, you are in charge, so you could even make shorts or 3/4 length trousers if you wish.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Pins can be purchased from almost any haberdashery or fabric store and can be found quite cheaply on amazon and Ebay. I would recommend any that are labelled long or large dressmakers pins as I find the shorter ones a little fiddly, but this is mainly because I have large hands.
Fabric scissors are also readily available at most haberdashers. If you do not already have specific fabric scissors, I would recommend Friskars (yes, the orange handled ones that everyone has!) They are reasonably priced, lightweight, reliable and have easy sharpening options available. They are also available in a variety of sizes to suit all hand sizes.
Fabric and thread can be purchased all over the place at hobby stores and haberdashers, here are a couple of online resources Pete uses frequently:
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Pete will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- How to accurately measure our bodies
- How to draw up a pattern using these measurements
- Fabric choice and preparation
- Basic garment construction
- Basting (hand or machine)
- Using notches
- Using stretch stitches like zig-zag, stretch (triple) stitch or lightning bolt
- Creating in-seam pockets
- Creating an elasticated waistband (and ankle cuffs if desired)
- The ‘Stretch while you sew’ technique
- How to evenly distribute fullness around a waistband
- Twin needle sewing (optional)
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- Sewing Machine with at least a zig-zag stitch (if you have a machine with a stretch/triple stitch and/or lightning bolt stitch even better)
- 3-6mm twin needle (optional)
- Thread
- Stretch/jersey knit material. I would recommend a sweat shirting as this will have a nice soft interior but any light to medium weight knitted/jersey material will be fine. (Cotton or blended sweat shirting, t-shirting for a lighter/summer version, punto di Roma, Punto di Milano, Ponte Roma, Lycra, elastane, scuba, neoprene).
- The amount of material needed will depend on the size and length you make but if your
fabric is 130-160cm wide you will need TWICE your outside leg measurement (waist to
half way between ankle and floor) PLUS 15cm - If your fabric is 100-120cm wide you will need TWICE your outside leg measurement PLUS
40cm
- The amount of material needed will depend on the size and length you make but if your
- 2.5-3.5cm wide elastic. You will need your waist measurement PLUS 10cm
- Pattern paper (dot and cross, plain or grid will all be fine, alternatively brown paper, grease proof paper or plain news print will do just as well)
- Pen/pencil, ruler and protractor
- Pins
- Fabric marker/tailors chalk
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter and cutting matt. (if you don’t already have a set of scissors specifically for fabric I would recommend the Fiskars, yes, the orange handled ones that everyone has. This is because they are reliable, come in a selection of different sizes for different size hands and have a good selection of sharpening options for the future, all at a fairly reasonable price)
- Iron
