This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for curious calligraphers who are open to exploration and challenge.
Workshop details
When we are learning a new calligraphic hand, it consists of the careful construction of letters. They fill our practice sheets, placed in groups according to clear characteristics. We construct words, sentences and text which offer a view to spacing, layout and composition.
In this class, we start by exploring a visual element that stays very close to the calligraphic processing of a text. We take little steps and examine new discovered pieces. We are open to exploration. Sometimes we turn back to recover forgotten pieces.
We go on to play with shape and colour, depth and proportions, absolute readability or complete illegibility. We learn to build a different but special image with 'bits and pieces', individually and personally. Elements of composition and layout are interwoven across all classes. Your development of a “good” eye is just as important as your skills and your knowledge of the materials. What Carry finds on your work table is the starting point from which a personal result can grow.
During the live sessions, we will focus on smaller sketches of A4 size. You will be encouraged to elaborate into a larger, A3 format for each of the homework challenges. There will be specific and tailored homework set for each of the four sessions, and the course fee includes detailed individual revisions on your submissions, as well as personal guidance from Carry for your development.
Join us for this conceptual journey of calligraphic discovery.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
For session 1: Please prepare a small piece of text (can be a haiku) in your most comfortable calligraphic hand in black on white paper. (Do not look for a wonderful design: a first draft is sufficient.) Determine one short word as focus. Write this word in minuscles and caps and enlarge both to 7 cm 'x-height'.
Pens:
Regarding all coloured materials, don’t buy in advance, wait until lesson 1. You’ll need the washi-tape for session 1, no limits on colour for these ones!

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Carry will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
