Gustave Courbet was the leader of a new school of Realism within French art . The artist was committed to painting only what he could see, he was radical and rejected many of the sacred principals of academic art of his day.
This talk examines his place in French art and his links with the Impressionist artists and the friendships and disputes with other painters. Courbet is an exciting and controversial figure and central to an understanding of mid nineteenth century art.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the blackboard.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
