Tutors: Martin Beek & Heather Victoria Held
Wed 25th October 2pm - 5pm
Our 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
This workshop is ideal for anyone with an interest in the work of Walter Crane and is open to students of all abilities.
Workshop details
In this exciting hybrid class, Martin Beek and Heather Victoria Held will be taking an in-depth look at work of English artist and book illustrator, Walter Crane.
ArtTalk
Martin will offer an overview of the life of Walter Crane, before focusing in on the glorious, and sometimes surreal, illustrations he produced. Although well known for his work as a book illustrator, Crane also worked on designs for wallpaper, ceramic tiles, and other decorative objects and was considered to be Britain's greatest socialist artist, working on many political pamphlets and producing weekly cartoons for a number of publications. We will look at examples from across his career for inspiration for our practical project.
Martin's talk will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.
Demonstration
The art of Walter Crane provides a treasure trove of unique ideas. From his florals and vines, to his borders and decorated initials, you can get lost in the details of his work.
In Heather's demonstration, we will hone in on the elements of his designs that make him so special. Crane leaves us a legacy of intricate black and white designs, calligraphic texts, and brilliant colour illustrations to choose from.
His letter designs stem from Neo-Classical Incised initials as well as Lombardic forms. Our practical project for this collaborative class will be to create a Crane-inspired initial and a foliate extension. You can illustrate along with Heather during the demo or you can take notes and use the handouts to create your own beautiful design.
There is so much inspiration waiting for you - let Walter Crane’s imaginative details awaken a sense of wonder in your own designs.
