Required Items
Optional Items
Bring if you already have, or if you need an excuse to buy! It may seem like a long list, but DON’T feel obligated to buy any or all of this stuff; you can always get it later if you want to duplicate the way we used it in class. There is a * by the items I highly recommend having available during class, and a ** for the REALLY useful items for the techniques that are the most popular with students.

Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Cheryl will offer personalised critique / feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.

You can use whatever lettering styles you are already comfortable using, including simple block capitals or your own regular handwriting. Do not be overwhelmed by the materials list below - the required items are all you will need to get started - anything else is a bonus!
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Numerous easy techniques for decorating envelopes that are truly impressive, even with minimal previous experience
- Easily determine what materials will be most useful for envelope decoration, layout and addressing, and how to use them
- How to most easily centre addresses on envelopes
- The best ways to keep lines straight on either light or dark envelopes
- Explore a wide range of possibilities for creative envelope layouts
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Required Items
- Your favourite pens or other tools for addressing envelopes, including inks and any other paraphernalia you normally use; calligraphy pens or not, whatever you are comfortable with.
- You do NOT need to have any experience in calligraphy to succeed in this class! If you have had some calligraphy experience, bring all of your usual calligraphy supplies, including your favourite ink(s), pen(s)/nib(s), and practice paper (you may find grid paper helpful even if you don’t usually use it for practice), plus items such as Gum Arabic, distilled water and loading brushes, if you normally use them. You can use cartridge pens (such as Parallel Pens, Manuscript pens, or others) and/or dip pens, in a variety of sizes suitable for addressing, though if you are familiar with dip pens, that’s what I’d suggest. (You can use calligraphy markers in a pinch, though the line quality will be lower.) If you do both broad-edge and pointed-pen lettering, I recommend bringing both types of tools.
- NOTE FOR BEGINNER CALLIGRAPHERS: If you are a beginner who is accustomed to using Parallel Pens, it is helpful to have one in the 2.4 mm size; I don’t recommend buying Parallel Pens smaller than that because the design of these pens is better suited to larger lettering. Instead of the small-sized Parallel Pens, if you’re not on the verge of starting to work with dip pens, I recommend getting a set of Manuscript brand cartridge pens, with the maximum number of nib sizes you can find.
- Painter’s tape, artist’s tape, or other low-tack tape
- Paper towels
- Ruler
- Preferred note-taking materials
- White eraser (click-type suggested, or your favourite alternative eraser)
- Pencil
- A selection of at least 10 envelopes—whatever nice ink-friendly ones you have handy, in any colours (it’s ideal to have some light and some dark if possible)—larger sizes tend to be better for this purpose
- ** Light box or light pad—optional but HIGHLY recommended. This is quite possibly the single most useful tool you can get for the practice of calligraphy/addressing, so if you are only buying one item for this class, this is definitely the one to get. See link below. The main concern of reviewers seems to be a very short cord, so you may want to look into getting a longer one; I think you might also need an adapter to plug it into the wall rather than a USB port.
- * Addresses of friends/family, if you’d like to use real addresses for your practice envelopes in class and send them
- ** Guidelines for lettering sizes suitable for addressing, especially if you have a light box/pad
- ** Rinse water container
- * Magnifiers/reading glasses, if you need them for the smaller details (hands-free if possible)
- Pen rest
- ** Pigma Micron fine-point markers (or similar waterproof markers). Recommended size: 005 or 01; 02 is okay too. Black is most useful; other colours optional.
- Scroll nibs/pens (available for cartridge pens [including both Parallel Pens and Manuscript brand], dip pens [Mitchell or Automatic brands], and markers [such as Zig brand])
- ** Coloured pencils and/or watercolour pencils--a basic, limited set of colours is fine (if you’ve never tried watercolour pencils before, this is one optional item I definitely recommend buying before class! Many students really enjoy exploring the possibilities with these. My favourite brand of watercolour pencils is Derwent Inktense, which offers bolder colors and more permanence than standard watercolour pencils, but it is a little pricier than some, and you can get any brand you like.)
- * Watercolours (a basic set of pan watercolours is fine; if you’re using tube colours instead, make sure you have something to serve as a palette)
- ** Pastels (chalk-type, not oil-based; you only need a few favourite basic colours)
- ** Stencils of your choice (no larger than about 5×7”—about 2” is ideal)
- ** A stencil brush (ideal), OR a small-ish clean and dry basic flat brush (nothing fancy; about ¼ inch wide), OR in a pinch, Q-tips or makeup application wedges
- Schmincke Tro-Col Aqua Bronze powder (colour(s) of your choice; rich gold is a favourite)
- Wink of Stella brush pen (clear colour is suggested, but get whatever colour(s) you like)
- * Stickles glitter glue (gold/silver/crystal [or possibly diamond?] 3-pack is the favourite set of colours); most people who like sparkly things LOVE this stuff!
- ** Pentel Sparkle Pop gel pens (get the pack of 8 colours; these are so much fun!)
- Ruling pen (the traditional kind)
- ** Washi tape (narrower types are better for this—about 6 mm wide or narrower—pick your favourite colours/designs)
- * Distilled water in a dropper bottle
- ** Metallic gold watercolour or gouache (#1 recommendation: Coliro (FineTec) brand, Arabic Gold colour), plus any other metallic colours of your choice—all of the FineTec (a.k.a. Coliro) colours are wonderful!
- ** Small round (pointed) brush, size 0 or smaller (size 000 is a favourite, or you can get a range of sizes from 0 to 0000)
- Flat brush, medium size, approximately 1 to 2 inches wide (2.5 to 5 cm)—for washes of colour; a cheap foam brush is okay
- Layout bond or marker layout paper, or standard tracing paper if you can’t get layout paper
- Protractor
- Black Factis eraser
- ** Exacto knife (preferably with pointed blade, though rounded blade is okay too)
- * Scissors
- Small cutting mat (OR you can use the cardboard backing of any paper pad instead)
- Rolling ruler
- T-square or triangle
- Fons & Porter white mechanical fabric pencil (or other fine-point mechanical white pencil)
- Saral transfer paper—both graphite and white recommended
- ** Embossing tool, preferably with ball ends of approximately 1.8 mm and 3 mm in diameter (my favourite one is the Kemper double-ball stylus, LARGE size; be sure to get the LARGE one; the others are too small for our purposes and may rip the paper)
- * Paint pen/gel pen in opaque WHITE ink, fine point; my favorite is the Uni-ball Signo Roller Ball Pen in white
- * Other glitter/gel pens, such as the Gelly Roll, in your choice of colors
- Scraps of paste paper or any other type of coloured paper, in either solid colours or patterns
- Glue stick (it’s ideal to have the kind that goes on in a bright colour and dries colourless)
- Clear nail polish
- * Cover sheet to put under your hand—I like using a piece of card stock
- Any other materials that you like to use which you think would be useful for adding decoration (rubber stamps or brush markers, for example)—recommend NOT using loose glitter!
- * Cleaning materials for your tools as needed (toothbrush, brush cleaner, etc. as you think best)
