ArtTalk details
Get ready for scenes of the crib, deep snowfall, Christmas trees, and ghost stories by the hearth, from the best of the Victorian era.
Many of our visual Christmas traditions are rooted in Germanic heritage thanks to Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. The prince, who moved to England to marry his queen, brought with him so much we take for granted today. Society readily embraced Albert's traditions for the festive season.
Christmas and the turn of the year are important themes in Victorian art, and many of the greatest artists of that period engaged with this new approach to the festival. The talk will look at Charles Dickens, Victorian illustrators and artists who contributed so much to our experience of this season. Some of the well known names of Victorian art like Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Arthur Hughes are all elements that make up this exploration of a seasonal theme through the eyes of artists.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the blackboard.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
