Class details
Start off the new year with a new skill! Acrylics are a wonderful versatile medium that can be used in a huge variety of ways. This two-hour beginners workshop will take you through basic techniques to enable you to paint with confidence. We will work through a range of exercises in a relaxed & informative way.
We’ll start off with the absolute basics covering tools, materials and colour mixing. There will be colour exercises to learn to use the primaries – which can appear very brash in acrylics. We will also discuss basic mediums & brushes – what to buy and how to use them.
We will explore blocking in and building up - this is all about using acrylics in layers….the default way to use them without additives. Acrylics can also be used to mimic a watercolour style – although they have different properties to watercolour – which we will explore using brushes & dip pens. They can also be thickened to mimic the look of oil paints and used in an impasto technique with bristle brushes and palette knives.
Acrylics are endlessly versatile – you can combine them with mixed media and even print with them. They are very forgiving and are a perfect medium for beginners and professionals alike. Once you have the basics under your belt you can experiment with all sorts of creative ways to use them.
Work-along with Karen during the class, or just watch & learn; the choice is yours!
Specific skills you will learn
- Colour mixing using ‘Process Colours’
- Tools & materials – suitability for working with acrylics
- Mediums and their uses
- Different techniques and approaches: thick/thin, transparent/ opaque etc.
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Karen will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
