Class details
Many of us are familiar with the basics of Italic script, but it can be at its most expressive when flourished in black on white or with added color. This class will show you that Italic can be delicate and gentle, big and boisterous, stretched and manipulated, and (hopefully!) fun.
In the first session, we will look carefully at the basic script, to ensure that we are doing it correctly, then we will experiment with flourishing, pen manipulation, and movement. One of the delights of Italic is the variation of letter shapes that can be achieved with a selection of different nibs and pens, some imagination and above all, confidence.
Then, during the follow up session, Jan will offer individual feedback on your work if you would like it, and revisit any sticking points you may have encountered during your practice at home.
Specific skills you will learn
- Revision of the correct basic letter shapes
- Using the pen correctly to flourish beautifully and with confidence
- Manipulating the pen, and our imaginations, for experimental pen movement
- How to create a piece of interesting writing
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Jan will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
*The tutor feedback section of our follow up session is not recorded. This is to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work without feeling self-conscious. Please join us live for this session if you can – even if you chose the ‘recording only’ option above. Rest assured that any additional tutor demonstrations will be recorded and shared.
