Class details
There’s nothing to beat the classic beauty of Roman Capitals – it’s hard to believe they’re 2000 years old and still beloved by calligraphers and typographers alike. Discover the details that make them special, and how to perfect them with the edged pen.
Using the Trajan Column lettering as our model, we’ll explore the letters in shape groups first with pencil then broad-edged pen.
There are simple tricks to help us make good letters, once we’re clear on the principles, and all those straight lines are good discipline. Letter spacing, line spacing, weight, and layout follow. There are many variations that can be achieved with these simple adjustments that can help to express the words.
Practice isn’t an end in itself, we need to be able to arrange our words effectively, so simple ways to assemble them on the page – tracing and cut-and-paste, will complete the session.
Specific skills you will learn
- Roman Capital proportions
- Broad-edged pen use
- How varying the Nib-widths affects weight
- What can be achieved with Serif variations
- Letter, word and line spacing
- Arranging on the page
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Mary will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
*The tutor feedback section of our follow up session is not recorded. This is to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work without feeling self-conscious. Please join us live for this session if you can – even if you chose the ‘recording only’ option above. Rest assured that any additional tutor demonstrations will be recorded and shared.
