Class details
Join Simon for a two-hour exploration of his unique art. He will briefly look at the artists that have inspired him to create his own Textual Art, and then go on to work through a set of exercises creating abstract letterform with different mark-making tools.
TEXTUAL: Adjective - Of, or pertaining to, text and letterform
ART: Noun - The product of imagination and creativity
You don’t need any calligraphic experience - this isn’t a class that relies on straight lines, neat handwriting or legibility. This is all about creating abstract letterform with different mark-making tools as well as some more traditional ones. Simon will demonstrate a selection of exercises and techniques that will see you create inspirational samples to inspire your future work. He will also talk through some of the ‘wet’ techniques that he applies to his work
This class is a pressure-free zone - there are no rules and no rights or wrongs. Simon will show you some techniques from his two books, as well as a couple of brand-new techniques for 2024.
Specific skills you will learn
- Altering text to create various 'textures'
- Abstract mark-making
- Exploring gestural techniques
- Use of unusual tools
- Use of inks and their reaction to water
- Creating layers
- Working on implying depth
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Simon will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
