Class details
Start off the new year with a new skill! In this introductory class, we will explore a range of related sixfold patterns found in architecture in Central Asia, from Persia through to Mughal India.
We will begin by familiarising ourselves with the tools, then we'll take a look at the processes and practicalities involved, and explore some examples. Working along together, we will then draw a series of lines and circles on a blank sheet of paper to construct the underlying grid. From this underlying grid a range of patterns can be drawn!
We will outline and trace the variations, and then Samira will show you how one of these tracings can be transferred and tessellated seamlessly to create an Islamic Geometric Pattern in watercolour and/or gouache on watercolour paper.
Specific skills you will learn
- Constructing Islamic Geometric patterns using a compass and a straight edge
- The practicalities of:
- outlining
- tracing
- transferring
- tessellating
- outlining
- The basics of painting your designs in watercolour or gouache paint
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Samira will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
