Our 'In the Style Of' workshops bring together our ever popular ArtTalks with the joy of a LivePlus™ class. Join us for an engaging talk with our resident art history expert, Martin Beek, followed by a live demonstration by a super talented Ardington tutor on the techniques of the featured artist.
Class details
In this exciting two-part hybrid class, Martin Beek and Heather Victoria Held will be taking an in-depth look at work of the renowned artist, William Morris.
ArtTalks
The two talks will provide further examination by Martin Beek on the exemplary work of William Morris, focusing particularly on his woodcuts and illustrations and their deeply rooted links to nature. We will also explore more about the background of this extraordinary man - a stand-out figure of the late nineteenth century.
Martin's talks will be illustrated where possible with original photographs and slides. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talks.
Practical Demonstrations
The iconic works of William Morris have never gone out of fashion and continue to fascinate. The patterns, so often inspired by nature, hold so many wonders when they are studied. In our practical sessions, we will begin to work on some Morris inspired border designs that can enhance your calligraphic work and help you to appreciate his style and palette.
Using the 'Rose and Thistle' design as our inspiration for session one, we will work on border using Indigo. You will be amazed at the range of contrast you can experience with a single pigment.
In our second session, we will expand our colour palette and, taking inspiration from Morris’ birds and blooms, will create a
more involved acanthus border. Heather will demonstrate some gold leaf work, but this is an optional stage for students and is not necessary to create your border designs.
There is so much to glean from the work of William Morris and the class and lectures will inspire countless ideas for your own work. This class is open to all skill levels.
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.
Heather will offer feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment.
