Course details
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Toni Watts back to our ONLINE programme in 2024 with this re-run of her 'masterclass'.
This four-week series will give you the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques for gilding on paper. It is a combination of all of her previous illumination classes rolled into one series, plus some basic watercolour painting techniques:
Week 1: Gilding flat on the page
Week 2: Traditional and contemporary methods for creating raised areas of gilding
Week 3: Making, binding and using shell gold
Week 4: Putting it all together, basic painting techniques, outlining your design and presentation
We’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and, as always, there will be tips and tricks for improving your gilding and suggestions for problem solving if your work doesn’t turn out quite as planned!
Students are encouraged to join live on Zoom each week to really make the most of this opportunity to learn from Toni. You will be encouraged to complete homework each week and share photos on the class information page. Each week will begin with a review of homework and the class has been kept small to allow plenty of opportunities for individual feedback.
You will be provided with an illustration designed by Toni to work on, which incorporates all of the techniques learned over the series, but creativity is welcomed if you would prefer to work on your own project.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Transferring a design to watercolour paper
- Using a variety of gilding sizes, both traditional and modern
- How to make, reconstitute and use manuscript gesso
- Using transfer and loose leaf gold
- Burnishing – how and when to polish the gold leaf
- Making, binding and using shell gold
- Basic watercolour painting techniques
- Presenting your work
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Tutors will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
