Course details
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Toni Watts back to our ONLINE programme in 2024 with this brand new watercolour class.
In this four-part workshop we will explore ways of painting flowers in easy stages, using watercolour paint. We’ll start by considering the medium itself - the difference between ‘student’ and ‘artist’ paint, pans and tubes - and how to apply it to the paper. We’ll also discuss the type of paper you might use for various projects.
Each week, we’ll draw a flower or leaf and paint it using a variety of different techniques. We’ll look at colour mixing, techniques for applying washes, the use of a dry brush, masking fluid and how to create light and shade to make our flowers look three dimensional.
This isn’t a formal course on botanically accurate art - artistic interpretations are welcome!
Students are encouraged to join live on Zoom each week to really make the most of this opportunity to learn from Toni. You will be encouraged to complete homework each week and share photos on the class information page.
Specific skills you will learn
- How to use watercolour to paint flowers and leaves
- An understanding of how to mix colours
- How to create smooth washes of paint
- Creating areas of shadow and light in the painting
- Use of masking fluid
- Use of different papers for different effects
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Tutors will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
