Class details
Next up in our 'Printing Without a Press' series is this Repeat Pattern printing class with Karen Carter. Learn all the tips, tricks and shortcut to make repeat pattern designs without a computer!
We will explore the wonderful world of repeat patterns from the informal and freeform to geometric and complex, using simple principles and techniques that make it look like you’ve done something complicated! We will take inspiration from Morrocan tiles, Mid Century design, and fruit and veg!
We will cover the basics of the design process looking at block repeats, step repeats, tessellation, and freestyle repeats, then play with the best ways of producing your images using a variety of materials including paper collage and simple stamps made from foam, polystyrene and soft-cut lino or stamp blocks. These can be inked up with printing inks, paint or ink pads to produce an endless array of repeat patterns – you’ll be amazed at what you can do with a simple shape!
You can use your designs to print on fabric, paper or even press into clay to make your own tiles and coasters – in fact anything that has a flat surface! A fun and informal workshop to introduce you to this addictive process – suitable for everyone, no experience needed.
Specific skills you will learn
- Creating a designs for a variety of pattern types
- Making stamps in a range of materials
- Inking and printing techniques

Karen will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
