Course details
With just a pencil, paper and ruler, this class will teach you to absorb yourself in the beautiful Italic letterforms that calligraphy is all about. Banish any ink anxiety and really focus on the letter shapes and variations. For those with some experience, we will also try some livelier options and other surfaces.
The pencil, once used by calligraphers simply for ruling lines, is now regarded as a calligraphic tool in its own right. We can create monoline letters, or build them up with extra strokes, add fancy serifs, and explore the popular ‘pressure-and-release’ technique for subtle effects of thick and thin lines.
The pencil doesn’t bleed, so papers that act like blotting paper with pens can be tried out with a pencil instead – delicate handmade tissue, fine fabric for example.
Beginners are welcome, the accompanying class handouts are designed for tracing in order to fully appreciate the letter shapes and family groups, and those with broad-pen calligraphic skills will find it a satisfying challenge to draw the letters with added weight where the thick-and-thin strokes would occur from a broad pen.
An optional extra is to prepare a surface with acrylic gesso as a great surface that accepts the pencil particularly well, but this can simply be watched to see if you want to explore that possibility later.
*The tutor feedback section of our follow up session is not recorded. This is to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work without feeling self-conscious. Please join us live for this session if you can – even if you chose the ‘recording only’ option above. Rest assured that any additional tutor demonstrations will be recorded and shared.
Specific skills you will learn
- The core features of the Italic hand
- Techniques for adding weight, serifs etc
- Understanding the concept of family resemblances in letterforms

Mary will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
