Course details
Karen and Janina join forces again to bring you this brand new series of workshops aimed to introduce you to the joys of travel sketching.
Over the course of four weeks they will introduce you to methods of capturing those precious memories from your travels, sharing tips, techniques and inspiration along the way. They will also be sharing pages from their own travel sketchbooks.
Week 1 - Mapping:
In this first week we will be looking at various ways of creating a stylised and illustrative map of your journey or destinations (this can be from a holiday or simply your local town). Karen will show you a nifty map-fold insert so that you can add the map into your sketchbook.
We will be drawing mini icons to represent some of the key landmarks so you may want to have your own photo reference available. You may also wish to have reference to a Google map (or similar) of your route and/or destination as a starting point for your own interpretations.
Week 2 – Buildings:
Janina will show you ways of capturing the essence of a favourite building seen on your travels, such as a café or kiosk. We will also be looking at how to draw architectural features such as doors and windows, as well as finding techniques for creating texture.
Week 3 - Food and Drink:
Having drawn the café in week two, we will venture inside and sample the food and drink, creating sketches to remind you of the tastes and flavours from your chosen locale. We will be using some of your paper ephemera collected from your excursions (a good excuse to try out different cafes, coffees and cakes!) We will also look at farmers markets and food stalls displaying their wares and tempting you with their produce!
Week 4 – Lettering and People:
It is good to add lettering to your travel sketches, whether as part of the image, or text to accompany the images, or diary entries to record your adventures. We will also look at easy ways to indicate people in the landscape or urban setting.
Although we will be working from the comfort of our homes Karen and Janina will share their favourite tools and materials to use when sketching outdoors.
Specific skills you will learn
Additional Information
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class.
Tutors will offer personal feedback for any work submitted via the class page within thirty days of the class ending. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
