Talk details
During this talk we will look at depictions of the working poor by Luke Fildes and Hubert von Herkomer, and the important influences of the great Victorian writers like Dickens and Carlyle, as Martin examines the fascinating relationship between the graphic arts and painting in Victorian England.
Some of Victorian England’s most powerful paintings are social realist, and the art of the time takes us into the very heart of Industrial Britain and the world of its factories and farms. These great paintings of industry, travel and elderly servicemen are both moving and thought provoking.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the class information page.
