Talk details
Martin looks at Art for Art’s Sake, the luscious and highly beautiful paintings of the 1860’s and 70’s. The talk will concentrate on artists such as James Tissot, Valentine Prinsep, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
The talk examines the links between art and fashion and the influences of Japan and France upon Victorian culture. In Victorian aestheticism one detects the seeds that were to flower in Art Nouveau and the art of the succeeding century.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the class information page.
