Class details
Join Kerri as she paints in the traditional 'Roses and Castles' canal art style. Roses and Castles is the popular generic name for the naturalistic and pictorial elements of the traditional paintwork of the narrow canal boats. She’ll create a castle scene reminiscent of those which have adorned working canal boats for hundreds of years.
Castle pictures were originally designed with a few simple ochre/cream towers painted against a background of clouds, sky and distant misty mountains. They were created quickly with as few brushstrokes as possible. There might be a bridge, fences, swans or sailing boats, depending on the whim of the painter.
Kerri will guide you through each step, sharing hints and tips along the way. The class will be split into two sections – the background layer and the detail layer. Kerri will be painting with the same enamel paints used to decorate the boats themselves.
You can choose to paint along if you wish for the background section, but you may need drying time before moving on to the detail layer. This will depend on conditions in your work area.
Students may opt to use acrylic paints, if they wish, but the results will be different to the enamel paints.
Specific skills you will learn
In this class we'll cover a wee bit of history, as well as;
- development of the art
- what kit you need (and how to treat it right!)
- different styles of castles
