Course details
An Introduction to Twining (Part One) is the first of a linked series of three, two-part classes. This first course will introduce the technique of twining; a simple off loom weaving process worked in the hands with a few simple tools. Twining involves the weaving of two active elements around a passive warp to create a dense weft face surface.
Starting with how to work the technique, it will then be applied to working in the round with the making of a simple round motif. This will aid the learning of all the basics of the technique you will need to move on further, such as beginning and ending, joining in a new thread, changing colours and how to tension the weave. This will be taught by demonstration, with supporting worksheets for printing out, and an opportunity to join in to weave alongside Mary. She will introduce the idea of keeping a sketchbox for your collection of samples and ideas, leading on to finished pieces of work. This will be referred back to during the course. You will be invited to practice your skills before the next class.
Week two will take your skills on to weaving a form. This will be led by Mary working from a recipe, with guided stages to make a small two coloured ‘pod’ form, (a pod being a rounded form with an opening), from the base learnt in week one. The recipe will be supplied as a printout worksheet. Mary will finish by introducing a simple two-colour pattern and further ideas for ways to finish the ends of the pod.
Part One leads on to Part Two – 'Bases & Borders' - in February and Part Three – 'Warps & Finding Form' - in March. Book all three classes in one transaction and use coupon code BASKET10 to receive a 10% discount.
NB. Twining can be tiring on the hands, neck and shoulders. Please consider this before booking.
