Class details
Acrylics are a wonderful versatile medium that can be used in a huge variety of ways – watercolour style, thick and luscious like oil paint, or layered and combined with other media…. (and anything in between!) It is a very forgiving medium – if you don’t like something just paint over it - great for complete beginners and experienced artists alike.
We’ll start off with the absolute basics covering tools, materials and colour mixing. There will be colour exercises to learn to use the primary colours – which can appear very brash in acrylics. We will also discuss basic mediums & brushes – what to buy and how to use them.
We will explore blocking in and building up - this is all about using acrylics in layers; the default way to use them without additives. Acrylics can also be used to mimic a watercolour style – although they have different properties to watercolour – which we will explore using brushes & dip pens. Lastly we'll look at how acrylics can be thickened to mimic the look of oil paints and used in an impasto technique with bristle brushes and palette knives.
This workshop aims to take you through basic techniques to enable you to paint with confidence. We will work through a range of exercises in a relaxed & informative way. No experience needed, just a willingness to ‘have a go’!
Specific skills you will learn
- Colour mixing using Process Cyan, Process Magenta, and Process Yellow
- Tools & materials – suitability for working with acrylics
- Mediums and their uses
- Different techniques and approaches: thick/thin, transparent/ opaque etc
