Class details
Next up in our 'Printing Without a Press' series is this experimental monoprinting class with Karen Carter. A monoprint is a one-off image created directly onto a sheet of glass or plastic with ink or paint, then transferred to paper.
Using additive & subtractive techniques combined with masks, line, and layering you can produce unique images that are somewhere between a painting and print. Spontaneous, fast, and fun - this is printmaking for anyone who likes to work freely with colour and expressive marks.
Karen will teach you the basics of this simple hand-printing process and you will learn how to produce multi-colour prints. We will look at creating layered images using printing ink/oil paint in different ways. We will also use watercolours and acrylics – not usually associated with monoprinting – to produce images from different surfaces, exploring fun ways to produce creative effects.
This is a process that produces a very painterly print which can be a finished piece of work in its own right, or be further developed with mixed media. No experience needed – just be prepared to experiment, play and embrace ‘happy accidents’!
Specific skills you will learn
- Using printing inks, watercolour & acrylics in a variety of ways to create one-off prints
- Additive & subtractive techniques
- Using a variety of substrates as printing plates
- Using masks & markmaking for layering

All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class information page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
