Talk details
The new century saw the emergence of a distinctive voice in home-grown American art. In 1913 the Armory show featuring modernist art from Europe, this is often seen as a turning point. The cities of Chicago and New York alongside the large World Fairs of the late nineteenth century set the scene for new and exciting developments.
This talk makes use of Martin’s many photographs taken in American collections. It covers the scope, ambitions, and creativity of early twentieth century USA. Many of the artists are less well known in Europe. This was a period crucial in the development of Modernism, and yet many new styles were not universally accepted. The Great Depression led to the WPA Federal Art Project and exciting developments arising out of adversity.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk via the class information page.
