Class details
Coptic stitch is a beautiful style of binding with an exposed stitch spine that looks like chain stitch. These books have an open spine which means the pages open completely flat. Coptic style books are ideal as gifts or to keep for yourself as a diary or notebook
During this two hour class, Janina will show you all the steps to make an A5 portrait book from scratch, using Coptic stitch to bind the book.
First you will prepare the covers; cutting them from greyboard, covering with decorative paper, and then allowing them to dry. Next Janina will teach you how to prepare the inside pages by trimming cartridge paper into the right size for the book and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’. You will then be shown how to make holes in the covers and the papers for sewing and will finally learn how to sew all the pages and cover together using Coptic stitch.
Specific skills you will learn
- Folding and trimming paper for the inside pages (‘signatures’)
- Measuring and cutting grey board covers
- Preparation of covers by applying decorative paper
- Sewing the book together using Coptic stitch
- Lots of tips for painless measuring, cutting and gluing
- Advice on suitable papers and paper grain
All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online class information page. Helpful and easy to use, these private pages enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – before, during, and after class. The link to access the page will be shared via email in the days leading up to the class.
We suggest that you do not buy any specialist materials more than one week in advance as, occasionally, a class may be cancelled due to low enrolment. For full terms and conditions, please click here.
