Course details
This class takes a loving look at the fascinating printed and hand drawn initials from the early 1800’s to the 1920’s.  Discover the nostalgic romance of these Faded Love Letters. All skill levels are welcome.  

The Victorians had a passion for ornamental lettering and decorative type designs that embellished their paper surfaces. These display initials take on many different shapes and forms such as rustic branches, inline florals, filigree forms, and cascading scrolls.

Taking our cues from early Valentine cards, ephemera, scraps, trade cards, and sheet music, we will draw and flourish our own intricate initials. The designs will be created using graphite, ballpoint pen, dip pens, and watercolour.

Many of the examples explored use a muted colour palette but anything is possible with these letters. The completed designs will be suitable for framing or can augment your calligraphic work.
