Course details
Italic is the most popular calligraphic script to learn as it is so beautiful and is most akin to handwriting.
In this class we will start from scratch with the non-threatening pencil, getting the families of shapes working, before moving on to the broad edged pen which introduces the all-important consistent pen angle. Dip pens can present difficulties for the beginner, so we’ll focus on using a felt-tipped pen or Pilot Parallel pen, where ink flow and dipping into ink aren’t an issue.
Ruling lines, letter-, word- and line-spacing will be covered, so you can confidently work on completing a short quotation or favourite poem.
Whilst it’s not possible to become expert in one lesson, this class will set you off in the right direction so you know how to start, how to self-critique, and practice regularly to refine your skill in your own time.
Specific skills you will learn
- Letterforms in group shapes
- The essential arch formation of italic
- How to rule lines efficiently
- Letter & word spacing, awkward combinations
- Maintaining a consistent pen angle
- Arranging on the page
