Course details
This course forms part of our STUDY programme; a range of longer courses, running over a number of weeks, exploring our most popular subjects in greater depth. Combining tutor-led live classes with elements of self-study, these courses are designed to stretch and challenge you, whilst maintaining the small & friendly learning environment we are known for.
In this seven-week course, Jo will guide us through a variety of approaches to landscapes. Experimenting with different media whilst incorporating the formal art elements of line, form, shape, texture, tone, and pattern. You will be encouraged to collect reference images, photos, and sketches of remembered, experienced, and imagined places to draw from. We will learn how to express our observations to create the look and feel we wish to capture in our landscapes.
Each week, Jo will focus on different artists and their approaches to drawing and painting techniques. We will learn how to tackle the different sections of the painting, explore how to use colour to create mood, and develop interesting compositions from different viewpoints.
The syllabus includes:
- The basic techniques of drawing and painting landscapes
- How to work with a range of references and artist studies
- Different approaches to painting and drawing
- Exploring, understanding, and developing composition, perspective, and depth
- How to work with various materials:
- Graphite pencil
- Charcoal
- Ink
- Oil pastels
- Watercolours
- Acrylic Paints
- How to build tones, colour palettes, and textures
- Colour mixing and combinations
