Course details
What are monobroads and what is so magical about them? Monobroads is Mark's term for lettering created using traditional monoline nibs or, more specifically, the monoline version of the traditional broad-edge nib. We're talking about nibs like the Brause Ornament, Speedball, William Mitchell Script, or Manuscript Ornamental, rather than a fineliner or fountain pen.
The magic comes from the beauty and accessibility that monobroads bring. Versatile lettering that can be learnt by everyone, offering a great insight to the principles of hand-lettering, layout, and design. Monobroad lettering offers opportunities for creative flair, and this class will explore variations in size, form, colour, and composition.
Broadly speaking the series will be divided into four key sections:
- Monobroad pens and formulating weights and scales
- Form and line, and variations of alphabetic forms
- Adding shapes and sizes to the form
- Composition, colour and complements
Collectively, this course will give you a good grounding in many aspects of monobroad lettering. You will learn how to navigate and use monobroad nibs, choose and develop original script styles, embellish and decorate your letters, and then how to present them in different and interesting ways.
A great class for students of all levels.
Specific skills you will learn
- Monobroad letterforms
- Choosing sizes and scales for compositions
- Monobroad variations
- Creating your own mono alphabets
- Layouts and designs
- Using colour and complementary elements
