This one-day, onsite workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with more experience.
Workshop Details
Coiling is a unique basketry technique because it is stitched rather than woven, spiralling from a central point, similar to how a coiled pot is constructed. It is a technique traditionally used in many places around the world, including areas of North and East Africa where brightly coloured and patterned coiled basketry is made using colourful wools and yarns.
All materials and equipment will be provided to make a small coiled basket on the day of the workshop.
Coiling is a fairly slow technique, so depending on how fast you work, and how decorative you want to make the border on your basket, you might only be able to complete one basket during the day.
If this is the case, you will be able to purchase additional materials from your tutor to make one or two more baskets at home. You will also receive plenty of explanation and demonstrations on how to approach working different borders.
Skills & Techniques Covered
Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee. All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be up to £10, payable to the tutor during the class. Please remember bring cash to pay for materials as the tutor doesn't have a card reader and can't accept BACS payments for materials.
Students please bring
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
