Workshop Details
Learn how to prepare and maintain your own indigo vat and techniques to create your own unique range of fabrics including the opportunity to create you own silk scarf. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes known to man (and woman) and is used to dye cloth in many cultures. From India - where the name originates - to Japan, Africa and Scotland; all of which have used this natural dye to colour cloth for many hundreds of years.
We'll be using traditional shibori techniques, tie dye, folding, clamping and resist to create a range of beautiful blue fabrics and threads. Techniques learned on this course can be applied to other dyeing methods.
Skills/Techniques Covered

Please Bring With You
- Natural fabrics and threads such as cotton, wool and silk to dye all these will need to have been prewashed to remove any dressing.
- Of course if they are in white, they will be dyed blue but you could also bring any coloured fabric, or unsatisfactory unfinished projects to over-dye (if these have been hand-dyed before, please also wash them to remove any loose dye so it doesn't contaminate the vat). I suggest you bring plenty of light to medium weight cotton to experiment with before you use anything more expensive.
- Plastic bags to take damp cloth home in.
- You could also bring a variety of screws, buttons, washers, bulldog clips, clothes pegs, clamps, rubber bands and string or strong thread/dental floss for tying the cloth before dyeing it. Needle and strong thread.
- This will be a messy day, so wear old clothes and overalls, you may also wish to bring rubber gloves.
