Supplementary Information
What devices work with Procreate? This application for sketching and drawing is created for iPad Pro specifically. The tablet must be running iPad OS 14.4 or newer. So before buying check your tablets iOS version.
As of the end of 2021 Procreate is supported on these iPad models:
Before you start
Remember to fully charge your battery. Procreate is often heavy on battery usage. Although most models claim nine hours of battery life, this is very rarely possible if running an art app. Keep your screen clean. Go to settings and adjust your screen brightness. Turn off any other active apps, location and Siri. Other location apps are particularly heavy on the processor. If buying a new iPad be sure to get plenty of memory. Some users like having a screen protector, although this can slow down the touch sensitivity.
Working on a tablet for prolonged periods can cause eye strain, be sure to take breaks and adjust screen brightness. Find a body position that suits you, some users like to use a table top easel or stand and keep the iPad at 90 degrees, whilst for sketching some prefer to support it on their lap.
Desk and tablet kiosks are available from bouncepad.com.
If drawing out of doors from landscape, it can be a good idea to take an empty cardboard box to shield the screen from external glare, this will enable you to make better tonal or colour decisions. Drawing from the front seat of the car, like David Hockney did for his iPad series is also a good option.
Does Procreate require an Apple pencil?
Not necessarily. Whilst Procreate implements 'Touch' technology of pressure-sensitive painting that allows you to use your finger, the best and most comparable user experience comes with a stylus. You would definitely want to get an Apple pencil, or use an iPhone-compatible stylus for the best results.
