In this five-part series of talks, our speaker Sharn Matthews will draw on her 40 years of hands-on experience to trace the history of female fashions through the ages.
From the extravagant wide skirts of the 18th century to the exaggerated shoulder pads of recent past, the talks (illustrated with images from museum costume collections across the country) will focus on everyday fashions of women through the last three hundred years.
Covering styles from panniers to crinolines, bustles to mini dresses, each new fashion has been reflected in the clothes people actually wore at home and for special occasions, Preserved in various museum collections, the surviving examples give us a glimpse into past lives and the changing world their wearers lived in.
