This four-part course aims to take you from basic techniques to painting with confidence through a variety of approaches in a relaxed & informative way. No experience needed, just a big apron and a willingness to ‘have a go’!
Session 1: The Basics:
- We’ll start off with the absolute basics covering tools, materials and colour mixing. There will be a number of exercises with colour to learn to use the primaries – which can appear very brash in acrylics. Using a simple coastal image we will look at working with a limited palette & utilising the transparent & opaque qualities of the paint. We will also discuss basic mediums & brushes – what to buy and how to use them.
Session 2: Blocking-in & Building-up:
- This is all about using acrylics in layers….the default way to use them without additives. Working with a landscape image we will tackle visual blending & mark-making using brushes and palette knives, sponges, even fingers!
Session 3: Watercolour Style:
- We will water down our acrylics (sometimes using mediums) as well as comparing them with acrylic inks, to play with techniques stolen from watercolour painting…..wet-in-wet, dip pens, salt effects etc. Using flowers & still life as our subject matter, we will splash, spatter & drip!
Session 4: Combining with Mixed Media:
- Acrylics are perfect for using with a whole variety of other media. In this session we will create a textural ground to work on, using old buildings as our subject matter. Using the paint both thick and thin and enhancing with oil pastels / water-soluble crayons or pencils we will allow the image to develop, adding further layers as necessary.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop:
- Colour mixing using ‘Process Colours’
- Tools & materials – suitability for working with acrylics
- Using various mediums and aggregates
- Different techniques and approaches: thick/thin, transparent/ opaque etc
- Tackling a variety of subject matter
- Incorporating other media
