Workshop Details
More and more people are enjoying the satisfaction of growing fruit and vegetables in their own gardens, on patios or balconies, and allotments these days. This three part course will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to get the best of your space, however big or small. It’s interactive too – with plenty of time to get input on your own plans!

In session 1, we will start with vegetables, salads and herbs. Taking the gardening calendar as our guide, we will start by exploring soil preparation, seed sowing, planting tubers, sets and plugs, and the principles of crop rotation. We will also cover off the best ways to look after your plants, and when and how to harvest.  You have the option to work on your own veg plot plan ready for the follow up in session 3.

In session 2, we look at growing fruit. This will include soft fruits, bush fruits and tree fruits with a focus on how to get the best out of your space, and some of the best varieties for good yields and flavour! Again, you have the option to work on your own fruit growing plan, ready for the follow up in session 3.

In session 3 we will be looking at your own fruit and / or veg plans from sessions 1 and 2 and the tutor will be giving you 1:1 feedback and advice, and answering any further questions you may have.  It’s always great to see what other students have come up with in these sessions too, and learn from each other’s questions and approaches.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshops:
  • The principles of crop rotation in fruit, vegetable and salad growing
  • How to plant, care and maintain fruit, vegetable and salad plots to get the best yields and flavour
  • An understanding of the best tools for these gardening jobs
  • Soil types, layouts, raised beds
  • Dealing with pests and diseases
  • Some propagation and pruning techniques
  • Full handouts will be provided

Equipment & Materials List:
This list is for guidance only. You may decide that you have tools or objects that will do the job just as well. You needn't have the tools whilst watching the live demonstration as this is the time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will get the link to the video recording which you can work alongside at home.

Recommended items:
  • Notebook and pencil or equivalent to make notes
  • Tape measure (optional)
  • Sketchbook for your own plot sketches (optional)
