ArtTalk Details
In this five-part series, Martin offers an introduction to the life and work of five of the best British painters.
Part 1: William Hogarth - William Hogarth is arguably the first really great artist of England; with a unique and often wry take upon his life and times. This talk will examine both his prints and paintings and the story he tells about 18th Century England.
Part 2: Thomas Gainsborough - The charming paintings of Thomas Gainsborough define an era. Gainsborough was an artist of extraordinary skill and vision. This talk looks at portraiture, landscape and fancy pictures as well as touchingly beautiful as paintings of his own family.
Part 3: Edward Burne-Jones - The latter day Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones is a firm favourite with many. His style inspired many symbolists of the late 19th Century, and reflects a work far beyond easel painting. This talk examines the stories, legends and inspiration behind his powerful body of work as well as looking at the man himself.
Part 4: Paul Nash - Paul Nash was among the most original artists of the early part of the 20th Century . This talk looks at his life and work, and particularly his contribution as an official war artist.
Part 5: J.M.W. Turner - J.M.W. Turner is one of Britain's best known artists. His career spans a period of enormous change; much of this is reflected in his ambitious and dramatic paintings. In this talk Martin examines many of his pivotal works from a long career picking out many highlights, providing an introduction to Turner's central themes and his part in the romantic movement. The talk will also look at Turner's legacy and his enormous influence upon subsequent generations.
