This three-part LivePlus™ online linoprinting course is designed for those with a little knowledge of the subject. It follows on perfectly from Karen's Linoprinting: Getting Started workshop in February, but this is not a pre-requisite.
Workshop details
In this series Karen will show you that linoprinting is a great technique to do at home…easy to learn, using minimal equipment with a whole host of variations available once you’ve got the basics.
Forget the blunt tools and tough lino of school days and enjoy the process with soft-cut lino and a whole range of approaches. Perfect for printing cards, wall art, fabric etc. whether you’re looking to expand your skills or just need a refresher.
Session 1: This is all about exploring colour – we will be using blends & rainbow rolls, spot colour, masks, a nifty cutting and sticking technique, & collage as well as making a basic registration device.
Session 2: Jigsaw prints, stamps & composite images…designing plates to be cut up, inked and reassembled in both a structured and informal way to create multicoloured images with minimum effort!
Session 3: We will look at working in layers…designing for a two or three layer linoprint; layering using polystyrene as a printing plate, freeform layering & creating interesting backgrounds using the back of the plate for simple monoprinting.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop:
Materials & equipment list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below. This list is for guidance only - you can improvise and source your own materials, either in advance or once you have seen the LivePlus workshop, giving you maximum flexibility to choose how you would like to approach this craft.
You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
Most suppliers have ‘starter kits’ for linoprinting – they vary in price according to content and usually contain the water-based block printing inks – but are worth considering as an easy way to get started. (Check they contain soft-cut lino rather than traditional lino)

- Lightweight cartridge paper or Japanese paper (Shoji is great and can also be used for Drypoint, Monoprint & Collagraph when printing by hand) – available from Intaglio Printmakers or Handprinted
- Black paper and coloured papers & tissue would be useful for some of the sessions but not essential.
- Caligo Safewash Relief Ink – Black, White & Primary colours (these are quite expensive but can also be used for Drypoint Etching, Monoprinting and Collagraphs if you are interested in other types of printing) OR water-based block-printing inks (make sure they are ‘over-printable’ for layered work)…these are generally cheaper but not as versatile.
- Softcut or Easy-cut Lino (A5 size is good for starters and can be cut to square, long thin etc)
- Set of linocutting tools
- Roller or brayer
- Sturdy piece of cardboard (back of an A4 pad will be fine)
- Polystyrene sheet – the polystyrene that supermarket pizzas come on is ideal – or you can buy A4 sheets from Amazon, Great Art, Handprinted.
Most suppliers have ‘starter kits’ for linoprinting – they vary in price according to content and usually contain the water-based block printing inks – but are worth considering as an easy way to get started. (Check they contain soft-cut lino rather than traditional lino)
- Two pencils (HB and 2H or harder), Biro, Dark wax crayon (optional)
- Scissors or craft knife, dessert spoon, masking tape
- Tracing paper or greaseproof paper
